Scripture:
1 Timothy 6: 1 All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God's name and our teaching may not be slandered. 2 Those who have believing masters are not to show less respect for them because they are brothers. Instead, they are to serve them even better, because those who benefit from their service are believers, and dear to them. These are the things you are to teach and urge on them.
Observation:
Slavery was a very common thing back in biblical times. There wasn’t much of a middle class and many of the poor people were destined to be slaves or servants. All work was performed by hand and it took many people to accomplish little in one day when compared to today’s standards. Many masters and slave masters were hard, cruel people and it must have been very difficult to work for and respect them.
Application:
The scripture tells us that we are to consider our masters (employers) worthy of respect. While we are on the job, we are to respect the person we work for and not slander them. We should do our best each and every day. Many times the only Christian a fellow co-worker may ever see or talk to is us. What witness do we leave with others that we work around? Are we lazy, complaining gossipers? Do we complain about the boss and badmouth others? We need to be honest in our work everyday and do the best job that we can.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, I want to honor You by honoring those who I work for. Help me to be a good worker, honest, dependable. Help me to show respect to those above me even when they are hard and unjust people. Help me to be a good Christian witness to those I work with. Amen.
