Scripture:
Jeremiah 51:5 For Israel and Judah have not been forsaken by their God, the Lord Almighty, though their land is full of guilt before the Holy One of Israel. Flee from Babylon! Run for your lives! Do not be destroyed because of her sins. It is time for the Lord's vengeance; he will pay her what she deserves.
Observation:
God is telling the people of Israel and Judah that He is going to destroy Babylon and defend His chosen people. He is also warning them to leave Babylon because He is going to destroy her.
Application:
In reading this scripture I looked up the symbolism of Babylon in the Bible. I found various definitions, but most commonly that Babylon is representative of every kind of evil. Israel and Judah are God's chosen people - like any believer today. So, in today's context, this is God telling His people that He has not forsaken us even though we are full of guilt ourselves. He warns us to leave every kind of evil because the day of His vengeance will come, and if we are still in that evil, we will be destroyed as a result.
Prayer:
Thank You, Lord, for Your provision and defense. Thank You for fighting my battles for me and not forsaking me. I have failed to win those battles on my own enough to know that I need You to do it for me - not with me. I pray that You would reveal to me the things that I am still doing wrong, and reveal what is going on in my heart that causes me to sin. Please root out any rebellious or deceitful seed that may take a hold of my soul. You are the God Almighty, and only You are worthy to be followed. Carry me as I make my way out of Babylon. Thank You, again, for not leaving me alone to do this on my own. Amen.
