Scripture:
Mark 4:5 & 6 "Other seed fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of soil. And after the sun had risen, it was scorched and because it had no root it withered away.
Observation:
Jesus is again teaching in a parable. This time it is about the word of God and how people receive it, or more specifically, the types of ears and hearts it falls upon and their response to it. Jesus is referring to the condition of our hearts when we receive His word and how effectively it can fulfill its lasting purpose.
Application:
There is so much depth in this parable, and I have been inspired by it many times, but this time what stood out to me the most were Jesus' words about the rocky ground "it had no depth of soil." When the Holy Spirit speaks, can it take root in my heart? Is my heart of the right quality of depth and sensitivity to hear and receive to the point of lasting fruit? The Holy Spirit is in constant communication with us and therefore His word as in this parable is constantly attempting to plant itself in our hearts. Is it able to? If it does plant itself, does it grow?
Prayer:
Thank You, Father, that I live under a Covenant that grants me the indescribable benefit of the ministry of Your Spirit to my heart. Lord, give me grace to be not only conscious of that word coming, but receptive and mature in my heart to grow in Your word when it is received. Amen
Once again, an awesome word. Loved it, Kevin.
