Scripture:
Psalm 119:9-11 How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.
Observation:
In this verse the Psalmist is making a direct correlation between memorizing the Bible and living a holy life. He is saying that living according to the Bible is THE way to live a good and upright life.
Application:
I need to be hiding as much of God's Word in my heart as I can. The benefit is that when temptation comes knocking at my door I will have the Word of God in my arsenal to turn it away. Jesus quoted scripture to Satan when He was tempted in the wilderness. There is nothing more powerful in reminding me, as well as reminding Satan, of Who is in control and how I need to live my life.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for providing Your word and Your instruction for the life I should be living. Thank You for the freedom and life You have given me in that life. Please daily renew a desire in me to hide Your Word in my heart. I want to combine the spiritual strength and intimacy with a great knowledge of Your Word and Your way of doing things...that I might not sin against You. Amen.
I love this blog, Clint. I've been aware that more and more people at FH are memorizing scripture. Just the other day, Sherrill was at the house and had two verses penned on her hand to memorize. Of course, it was for the Christmas program (ha!), but I thought what a great by-product--all of these people memorizing for the program gets to have these in their "arsenal" as well!
