Scripture:
Hebrews 12:1b-4 And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.
Observation:
Jesus laid down many of the joys of this world in exchange for the "joy set before him," even to the point of death after which He sat sat down at the right hand.
Application:
I do not believe that having joy in this life is bad. Jesus tells us that He wants His joy in me: John 15:11 "I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete." Forsaking joy altogether would be senseless or possibly self-seeking. However, it is better for me to chose joy in heaven over joy here on earth whenever the opportunity arises. In this way, I can live for His kingdom now.
Prayer:
Thank you, Father, for the many joys that You have given me. Help me to persevere in seeking the "joy set before" which is better.
