Scripture:
Psalm 4:6 You have put gladness in my heart, More than when their grain and new wine abound.
Observation:
The author is referring to those in the previous verse who say "Who will show us any good?". These are the people with whom he is comparing the joy that the Lord gives. They are dependent on the outward circumstances, but the author is dependent on the joy that the Lord gives. In short, the joy the Lord gives is better than the joy derived from the best circumstances possible without the Lord.
Application:
I have been in a season where God has been trying to teach me this very thing: That my circumstances and the emotions that they create in me would not determine my outlook. That the truth of God, His promises and His favor toward me would be the determining factors in my contentment and peace. I long not to be swayed away from these things by fortune or misfortune alike, but to be anchored in who God is and who He says I am. If I am truly grounded in an awareness of who He is, I won't be able to help but be happy all the time.
Prayer:
Father, do Your work in me and do it completely that I may give You glory by living a life that is steadfast and that displays an attitude of joy and peace that makes sense in light of who You are.
Kevin, loved your blog. It really spoke to my heart.
