Scripture:
Psalm 10:1, 17-18 1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? 17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, 18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.
Observation:
This psalm is awesome! It's a little violent for me, but the meaning is driven home for me. This whole psalm talks about the what the wicken does to the helpless and oppressed, but then it ends with the triumph of God coming to the weak ones' rescue.
Application:
These verses were really funny to me--the opening talks about "where IS God?" and then it ends with "You always hear and defend the helpless..." When I pray, I think sometimes I come to the Lord without a lot of faith saying the same thing this psalmist said "WHERE ARE YOU?" Then as I begin to pray and praise Him, I start recognizing (once again) who He is. That alone is reason enough for me to pray--not just so God knows I'm calling out to Him and staying in communication with Him, but to remind myself of who He is: the Answer, the Joy, the Peace, the Counselor, the King, the Almighty, the Sovereign God and my Master. Just writing it makes my heart lighter!
Prayer:
Dear Father God, thank You for ALWAYS being there, for ALWAYS coming to the rescue of the weak, even if I can't see it sometimes. I know by faith that You ALWAYS hear and act. Thank You, my dear Master, for Your unfailing faithfulness and strength. You are the great God of the universe, and I praise You with all of my heart for who You are. Amen.
