Scripture:
Psalm 24:1 The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; 2 for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters. 3 Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. 5 He will receive blessing from the LORD and vindication from God his Savior. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, O God of Jacob. "Selah" 7 Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 10 Who is he, this King of glory? The LORD Almighty-- he is the King of glory. "Selah"
Observation:
I've always loved this psalm because scholars believe it was written for the occasion of King David bringing the ark of the covenant to its resting place in Jerusalem. It's powerful and awesome, yet tender and reverent.
Application:
The ark represents Christ, and I love that David penned this with the aim of directing people away from the external things about the ark and more toward having "clean hands and pure heart." He urges people to seek the Lord--SEEK HIS FACE. Then he goes on in vv.7-10 with powerful imagery--I can just picture the gates and the doors to Jerusalem bursting open with the ark majestically being brought in with all of the pomp and circumstance it deserved. Such is my King--Jesus deserves everything of the BEST, everything I can give Him, everything I can do Him. He is King of kings and Lord of lords!
Prayer:
Father, do help me to do my best for You, that whatever tasks you give me to do, that I do them with excellence, to the best of my ability. You deserve nothing less. I love You, Lord, and want to serve You with clean hands and pure heart. Purify me, clean me out, that I might serve You in Your kingdom. In Jesus' name, Amen.
