Scripture:

Numbers 17:10 The LORD said to Moses, "Put back Aaron's staff in front of the Testimony, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious. This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die."

Observation:

People had been grumbling about who could minister before the Ark of the Covenant. This ministry had been given only to the Levitical tribe of Aaron. Through an incredible test, God showed that only the Levitical tribe could do this. They kept the rod in the Ark as a memorial, and then Moses' motives surface...

Application:

God is incredibly gracious and full of mercy, but man! He can get angry, too, when people go against His commands. This is a perfect example, and further, the chapter intimates that He didn't like anyone grumbling against His man Moses. He has Moses perform this test with all of the staffs, proves that Levi's tribe is THE tribe, and THEN His anger subsides and no more people die! What I love about this verse is that Moses (in many other incidents as well) cares so much about the people, he tries to find any way possible to save them, even when THEY are doing the wrong! Oh, to have a heart like that.

Prayer:

Father, You know that sometimes I'm not so kind toward people who are mean and wicked, especially if their meanness is directed at me. Soften my heart; help me to love people the way YOU love people. Help me to see beyond their actions and look into their heart and know that they are valued and loved by You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
