Scripture:
1 Corinthians 5:1-5 1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. 2 And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this? 3 For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has been doing this. 4 So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, 5 hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.
Observation:
There is blatant sin going on in the church and no one is bringing it to light. It's like if they don't talk about it, it won't affect them. But what Paul is saying is that the church needs to set a standard, and that ignoring it hurts the whole church and all of it's members. And we are all responsible to take action, in a Godly way, to help set things right.
Application:
Wow, this is a really hard chapter for me. I'm not one to want to call someone out. But I know that I (in my heart of hearts) would want someone to call me out if I was doing wrong and hurting the kingdom of God. So on that note, I pray that if I come face to face with an issue that is in need of attention to further God's work and to help right a wrong, I face it head on, first giving it to God, then going to the leaders of the church for support and help them winning the battle!!!
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for giving me life. Thank You for stirring my heart to want to fight the good fight. Thank You for showing me how to stand firm on Your Word, and thank You for loving me for who I am. Amen.
