Scripture:

Proverbs 13:4 The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.

Observation:

Solomon is spouting off proverbs like they're a second language--and one that he speaks fluently! I can't believe how "genius" this guy was! God not only gave him wisdom, but an intelligence greater than anyone I've ever heard of. This proverb talks about how a lazy person craves things but doesn't get them, but the desires of a faithful person are satisfied or fulfilled. I love even the semantics Solomon uses--with the sluggard, he uses the words "craves" and "nothing," which are both negative words; with the diligent, he uses the words "desires" and "satisfied." Soothing, positive words.

Application:

This little proverb--man, it speaks a world of wisdom to me! When I get lazy by procrastinating or whatever, my flesh gets very hungry and controlling and what does it get me? Nothing but frustration and self-loathing. When I'm faithful, diligent, determined to finish a task, what do I get? Satisfied, even if it's just with a "job well done"!

Prayer:

Father, help me to fight my flesh through Your Spirit. I want You to control all of me, even when my desires become cravings due to my lack of keeping my eyes on You. Help me to recognize when things are going haywire in my life and to seek You more faithfully. My life is upside-down when I get things ahead of You. You are the Giver and Sustainer of Life. I surrender my will to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
