Scripture:

Romans 14:19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.

Observation:

Paul is instructing the church to "make EVERY effort" to live in unity. Unity and Christians living in peace together is a very dear subject to the heart of God. It is mentioned throughout Jesus' last prayer before His crucifixion. It is also the way that Jesus tells us that we will be recognized as His disciples.

Application:

We need to be doing things to build each other up. That can look very different in different situations. It most often looks like encouragement and uplifting words. However, sometimes it means holding each other to a higher standard. A dictionary definition of edify is "to instruct or improve especially morally or spiritually". Sometimes that instruction and improvements hurts, but when done with true kindness it is ALWAYS the best thing for us. I know that I constantly need to be improving.

Prayer:

Thank You, Jesus, for Your Spirit that unifies us. Thank You that I have brothers and sisters that I can stand with in our hard times. I pray that You would guide me to make every effort toward peace and edification. Use me as a vessel to bring unity and strength in Your Kingdom. Amen.
