Scripture:
Amos 5:14-15 Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the Lord Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the Lord God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.
Observation:
This whole passage is a warning and perhaps a prophecy to the people that the Lord is not pleased with their actions and is about to pour out His judgment on them for turning away from Him.
Application:
I think this is a good reminder of the values I should strive for in my life. If I am listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit, naturally I will be loving what is good and hating what is evil. This can apply to all areas of my life- my attitude, my goals, my lifestyle in general. My human nature naturally leans towards whatever is evil and sinful, so it is important for me to spend the time with God in my daily life to learn how to hear and be sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit. As a Christian, the Holy Spirit has been what has helped me and will continue to help me to overcome my sinful nature and embrace everything that is good in life.
Prayer:
Lord, I pray that You will help me to be sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit in my life today. Especially around my family, help me to show Your love today and to reflect Your heart in my attitudes and my actions. I want to value everything that is good and hate everything that is evil. I know I can find all strength and comfort in You for anything I am going through in life. Thank You, Lord, that You don't give up on me even when I have had a bad day and turned away from Your ways. Guide me in following You.
