Scripture:

Joel 1:2,3,8 Hear this, you elders; listen, all who live in the land. Has anything like this ever happened in your days or in the days of your ancestors? 3 Tell it to your children, and let your children tell it to their children, and their children to the next generation. 8 Mourn like a virgin in sackcloth grieving for the betrothed of her youth.

Observation:

Throughout this chapter people are told to weep, mourn, wail, and despair. At the very beginning Joel tells them to remember this time and pass it on to future generations. They are told to remember their sorrow.

Application:

I do not enjoy sorrow. In fact, it is rather unpleasant. But sorrow's work is to develop repentance in me. A true repentance. Not flippantly "Oops. I sinned, God forgive me." Sorrow provides a true revelation of how sin grieves the Father's heart and causes me to turn from sin to the Son. Then He removes the regret. I need Godly sorrow's work in my heart.

Prayer:

Jesus, I give You thanks for the cross. Give me the foresight to allow sorrow to work and work quickly on my heart.
