Scripture:
Ecc. 7:14-15 When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider: God has made the one as well as the other. Therefore, a man cannot discover anything about his future. In this meaningless life of mine I have seen both of these: a righteous man perishing in his righteousness, and a wicked man living long in his wickedness.
Observation:
Solomon is talking about things that appear unfair, such as a good man dyng and a bad man living a long life, but that I should accept it all because God is in control.
Application:
Man, Solomon is one cynical guy here. I remember my dad teaching me about Solomon becoming cynical perhaps because he married so many women (and had hundreds of concubines, too!) from all over the world and that they brought their ungodly religions with them. The further I read in Ecclesiastes, the darker it seems to become. These verses, though, really spoke to my heart. It's easy sometimes to look at others and wonder why they get this and this and I get none of it. I think of my friends who right now can't conceive and they have to wonder at times about women who don't even WANT to get pregnant having children all the time.
I sometimes cry out at the injustice of the world's systems, even how far left-wingers have painted Christians as intolerant, violent, narrow-minded bigots. I want to shout that WE are the peacemakers, the ones who love everyone as God loves them! It seems so unfair sometimes!
Just last night Misty spoke at "The Vine" about how we get mad at God sometimes, and that that might is okay as long as we are respectful towards Him and NOT become bitter. Therein lies the rub--anger leads to bitterness, and with bitterness, the Bible says we open ourselves up to all kinds of sin.
Prayer:
Father, Through the years I've been learning not to look at others and compare myself to them. Help me to continue to grow in that. You made all things good, and the things that come along that aren't so good You can use for Your kingdom's benefit, which is what I truly want. I'm thankful for what I have, Lord, but I pray for a larger heart of thankfulness. You are so good to Your children, Father.
