Scripture:

John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Observation:

This was the first verse I ever memorized...and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Here Jesus is talking to Nicodemus about being born again. Jesus is laying out the plan of salvation for Him, and answering the questions that Nicodemus brings up.

Application:

Because this is such a commonly known verse, I think I often overlook exactly why it is so universally known. This verse sums up the entire purpose of Jesus Christ coming to earth, dying on the cross, and rising again. God has so loved ME that He gave His son's life so that I can spend eternity with Him in Heaven. I think the word "gave" hit me particularly different this time around. He didn't "send" or "loan" His son. Jesus wasn't borrowed from the Father - Jesus was given. What an amazing gift! God gave His one, and only, son to us as worthless humans so that we could find eternal salvation through Him.

Prayer:

Father God, thank You once again for giving Your Son to me. I am nothing in myself, but I am invincible with Jesus. Thank You for the gift of eternal life through His sacrifice. I pray that you will constantly remind me of this gift and give me the strength and courage to tell the world that I serve the only God that sent His only Son to earth so that I can have eternal life. Amen.
