Scripture:

John 21:21-23 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

Observation:

Here Peter is asking about how John is going to die, and Jesus is letting Peter know that he needs only to be concerned about himself. Jesus did not say John would not die He said, "If I want him to remain alive until I return." I think they were busy worrying about what everybody else was doing instead of taking care of their own faith.

Application:

I can honestly say I've been in Peter's shoes many times: comparing my life to others; making excuses if my faith isn't where it should be; or even questioning God about His fairness. "Why are they so blessed? Look at what I do." Well, I guess it's true--the buck stops here. Time to get real and be true to God and myself. Stop playing by my rules and start playing by God's. That's my plan of attack.

Prayer:

Okay, God, so here it is--the hard plain truth. I need You, and I need to stop pretending. I pray that I continue to grow in You so there is less of me. I don't want to be that person anymore. I know I have come a long way, but there are times it sneaks back in, and in those moments please help me to remember this verse. Thank You, Lord, for all You are. In Christ I pray this. Amen
