Scripture:
Luke 4:3-4 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
Observation:
Jesus has gone 40 days without food at this point, and Satan tempts him first with the thing that is most likely to be on His mind at the time. After 40 days of not eating, I imagine that food was a pretty regular thought as Jesus continued through the wilderness.
Application:
What areas am I leaving open for temptation? If Satan were to look at me, what would he say are areas that he could possibly trip me up? Jesus was obviously not overcome by these temptations, but at the same time, if they weren't tempting, then it really would not have been a test. Jesus was tempted, and possibly even considered the consequences of allowing himself to give in to those temptations. Satan knew that He had to be hungry - after all, He was completely human. I wonder if what Satan sees when he looks for areas of weakness in my life. Also, I noticed that Jesus uses scripture to defeat Satan. Memorization is a key for Him living a holy life - and overcoming Satan's temptations in this verse.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You so much for allowing Your Son to go through temptation so that I can see an example of overcoming. Thank You for giving me a way out, and giving me scripture that I can lean on in times of weakness. I pray that You will show me the areas of weakness in my life, and give me the grace to strengthen those areas. Protect me from the things I am not yet ready to face, and gird me up for the things I will face. Help me to depend on You and Your Word so that I will be prepared when the enemy of my soul attacks me. Amen.
