Scripture:

I looked again, and there before me was a flying scroll. 2 He asked me, “What do you see?” I answered, “I see a flying scroll, twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide.” 3 And he said to me, “This is the curse that is going out over the whole land; for according to what it says on one side, every thief will be banished, and according to what it says on the other, everyone who swears falsely will be banished. 4 The LORD Almighty declares, ‘I will send it out, and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of anyone who swears falsely by my name. It will remain in that house and destroy it completely, both its timbers and its stones.’”

Observation:

Judgment is coming to Israel and all of mankind, we cannot escape judgment,

Application:

When Zechariah was written, scrolls were used instead of books. Scroll’s normally had writing on one side only. But in a few cases God wrote on both sides of a scroll. When he does it indicates judgment is coming. In Zechariah 5, a flying scroll the same size as the tabernacles Holy Place warned that those who failed to keep the law would be banished from God’s presence and their homes would be destroyed. In Ezekiel 2: 9-3:3, a scroll with writing on both sides meant Israel was going to be judged and the whole nation of Israel was going to join the captives in Babylon for a 70 year stay. Revelation 5:1 says And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. A scroll written inside and on the back tells us Christ, who is the only one able to break the seven seals, is clearly established as Lord and executes the will of God, the Father who is seated on the throne. The Father has willed that the Son oversees its execution. John 5:22, 27 and Acts 10:42 tells us that Jesus is Judge of all. This is the central purpose of the Revelation: to reveal the Son’s execution of the Father’s judgment against both the living and the dead. John does not explicitly indicate what is contained in the scroll because Revelation 8-20 contains the judgment of God against wickedness, Judgment is the outcome in all 3 instances There is historical evidence of scrolls containing seven seals. In both the Jewish and Roman worlds, seven sealed scrolls were very common. Specifically, Roman law mandated that wills be validated by the seals of five or seven witnesses. Jewish magic also employed the motif of seven seals

Prayer:

Dear Omnipotent Father, You were, are and will be our judge. We will ALL be judge once. Thank You that You will judge us righteously and fairly, and we will not swear falsely by Your name. Thank You, Lord, for opening our eyes and ears and giving us the truth of what is to come and Your judgments.
