Scripture:

Luke 6:45 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.

Observation:

I think this is pretty cut and dry. Jesus is saying that it is that which is in our heart that drives what we say and do. We can all fake it here and there, but over the long term our true heart becomes apparent.

Application:

The scripture is really pointing out hypocrisy in our lives. We act a certain way around certain people, we may speak differently and act accordingly. But over the long term, what we say, how we act, how we treat others really shows what is truly in our hearts. It’s easy to come to church and be friendly, sing and worship God and appear to be good Christians. But what happens the rest of the week? How do we act, and how do we treat others at work? A real indication of your heart is what you do when you know that no one is looking. We need to be the same throughout the week, wherever we are, whomever we are with.

Prayer:

Lord, I pray for You to change my heart, to wash me and make me pure. I want my heart to reflect Your will in my life, not my desires and motives. Forgive me of my sins and restore in me a clean heart. Amen
