Scripture:
Luke 14:25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters--yes, even his own life--he cannot be my disciple. 27 And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
Observation:
There were a LOT of people following Jesus at different times in His three-year ministry. Here He tells people blatantly to hate his family! Jesus, I'm sure, has a different meaning here than first meets the eye. If we love anything MORE than Jesus, we're not fit to be His disciple. He wants ALL of us--everything!
Application:
I frequently have to search my heart to see if I'm putting anything above my love for Christ. If I do, it's usually my family. If I want to grow in this journey with Jesus, I have to not only WANT Him to be everything I need and desire, but He actually has to BE everything I need and desire.
Prayer:
Father, I love You and desire You above all else. I know that sometimes I look to my husband or kids or grandkids to bring me comfort and happiness, but You really are the only One who can give me those things that will endure forever.
