Scripture:

Luke 13:6-9 A man planted a fig tree in his garden and came again and again to see if there was any fruit on it, but he was always disappointed. Finally, he said to his gardener, "I've waited three years and there hasn't been a single fig! Cut it down. It's taking up space we can use for something else." The gardener answered, "Give it one more year and I'll give it special attention and plenty of fertilizer. If we get figs next year, fine. If not, you can cut it down."

Observation:

God expects me to be more than just "there." I'm expected to produce good things as a Christian and to grow over time. If I'm still in the same place as I was last year or last month, then I am just "taking up space."

Application:

I feel so fortunate that God doesn't give up on me right away when I become stagnant or complacent. But He is telling me that in order to grow I need to be giving my soul "special attention and fertilizer." The only way I can grow in my relationship with Him is by putting time into it, by reading His Word, and through prayer.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for not giving up on me. Thank You for challenging me with Your Word, so that I can wake up and start growing in my relationship with You again. Help me to take the time that's needed to draw near to You and to live a productive life for You.

  1. Annica, I know you were teaching the kids in class last week during my message, but this was almost EXACTLY the essence of the message! I'm so glad God has given you this revelation. Produce or cut bait, type of thing! haha.
